On Monday, March 1, at around 1 p.m., Milford police responded to an armed robbery in the parking lot of Sikorsky Federal Credit Union, 15 Turnpike Square.
A woman and a juvenile were entering a vehicle after leaving the credit union when a dark SUV pulled up. A man got out of the car, stood in front of the woman, and told her to give him the purse or he would harm the juvenile, Milford Police said.
The woman then put the juvenile in the vehicle and turned back to confront the man, identified as Douglas Hutchings, 49, when he pulled out a handgun.
The woman began screaming and Hutchings then struck her in the face reached inside the vehicle took her pocketbook and stole the SUV, police said.
Milford Police detectives found the vehicle in New Haven after tracking the victim’s cell phone that was in her purse.
Hutchings, of New Haven, was developed as a suspect for this case and multiple armed robberies in New Haven, West Haven, and Milford, and an arrest warrant was obtained.
"At the time of these incidents, Hutchings was on federal parole for a bank robbery that he was convicted of," police said.
On Monday, June 7, East Haven Police and US Marshal's agents located Hutchings while executing a search warrant in East Haven.
Hutchings was then turned over to the Milford Police Department.
Hutchings was charged with:
- Robbery
- Larceny
- Assault
- Risk of injury to a child
- Reckless driving
He was held on a $350,000 bond.
